An Open Letter to my Book Characters

It's occurred to me that a lot of the time, I'm not very nice to my characters. Not just because they get into dangerous situations a lot, but because I don't do them justice on the page. I have written flat characters, boring characters, and characters that weren't fully developed. In short, I feel like my characters deserve an apology.

So here we go.

~~~~~
Dear characters,
I am sorry for all the times I made you do things you would never do in real life.
I am sorry that I made you suffer through fifty-seven drafts while I tried to make your story right.
I am sorry for putting you in life-threatening situations.
I am sorry that sometimes you don't survive said life-threatening situations.
I am sorry that I often don't do you justice on the page.
But I promise
That I will do everything in my power to make you the best you can be.
To make you live.
To make you breathe.
To make you real.
And I just hope that you can bear with me while I figure you out.
Sincerely,
Your author.
