An Interview with Author Karina Flores!

Today, I'll be interviewing lifestyle and children's author Karina Flores! Karina lives in Mexico, and she's recently written a bilingual children's book in Spanish and English. You can find her on Twitter, Facebook, and Goodreads.

Welcome, Karina!

First, tell us a bit about yourself.

I live with my husband and daughter in Ensenada, B.C., Mexico. I studied accounting, finance and business administration, but took a chance to write my first book, "La Boda Perfecta", published by Larousse Group in 2013. Then I decided to write my first children's story to celebrate the fourth birthday of my daughter Isabella.

I speak Spanish; English is my second language.

What books have you written, and what genre are they?

1. La Boda Perfecta (The perfect wedding). Wedding planning (2013).
2. Isabella in the land of fairies. Children's/Fairy Tales, Folk Tales & Myths (2014)

Tell us more about your children's book!

"Isabella in the land of fairies" is a charming fantasy tale where fairies and dragons guide children through an imaginary world while helping them develop their reading skills.

It's a brief book written in easy-to-understand Spanish and English.  My kid is the illustrator of the book (she was 4 years old).

What age is your book for?

1 to 9 years old ... but the grandparents love the book too.

Where do you get your inspiration from?

My kid, Isabella. She is strong and smart, and I wanted to let her personality shine through the story in the book.

Her 4th birthday was coming and I wanted an original themed party, so I invented the story. We recreated all the scenes at the party with the blue fairy and all ... the dragon was the piƱata of course. At the end each girl received the printed story with her name on it (Isabella and _______ in the land of fairies). It was a fabulous party.

How did you come up with your characters?

Once I started writing they just landed there on my laptop!!

When did you first start writing?

A long time ago, a friend was going to get married. He was alone planning the event since his girlfriend lived in another city. He came home to have dinner and I started to suggest a lot of things that he needed to do. It was his idea ... he insisted "Karina, you must write a book!" and that was it.

Where do you like to write?

I like to write at home, at night ... very late, on my favourite couch.

What are some of your favorite books?

I love to read!! I love Dan Brown's books, Jill Mansell's romantic novels and of course the Harry Potter series.

Do you have any tips for up-and-coming authors?

Don't get discouraged, ever. Write, write, write and finish your book. Then, very important, register your book. Take a break. Promote your book, don't stop.

You've been both traditionally published and self-published. Is it better to find a publishing house, or to go it alone?

With my first book I got a 5 year contract with a big, BIG publishing house. First year was great on royalties, then the company changed personnel and the book was forgotten. I can't promote my book until the end of the 5 years (because of the contract).

With the children's book I decided to self-publish. It's a lot of work, but you have the control of what you want to do with it.

In my experience, any way that you choose for your book, you need to work a lot. If you go traditional, be sure that the contract with your publishing house let you promote it.

Gracias, Karina!
